Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the principal teaching hospital of the Washington University School of Medicine. Although the care of all patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is directly overseen by a faculty member who serves as the attending physician/surgeon, such as Dr. Thompson, the care team that helps manage our patients includes medical students, general surgery residents, and advanced specialty fellows in vascular surgery. Other members of this team include the hospital nursing staff, the vascular surgery nurse practitioners, other hospital personnel (e.g., social work, physical therapy), and members of Dr. Thompson’s staff. Patients who have undergone surgery will be accustomed to having members of this team making rounds at least twice each day and to interacting with the residents and fellows on a frequent basis. Dr. Thompson and other attending vascular surgeons generally make individual rounds on an unscheduled basis, but are in frequent direct contact with the nurses, residents and fellows on the team and are always available.
